The Falcon Came Out of the Machine Grey: Where the Eleven Star Wars Finishes Begin

People assume the hard part was the printing.
It wasn’t. The printing was the headline—the largest 3D printer in Europe, a Voxeljet bed running to a schedule few would have believed, and a full-scale Millennium Falcon coming into existence in sections.
What came out of it was a Lucasfilm- and Disney-endorsed build: a complete cockpit and lounge, to size, made to be walked into by the public rather than shot. That distinction matters, and I will come back to it, because it made the paint job harder rather than easier.
Here is what the feature does not really convey. When a print of that scale comes off the machine, it is grey. Uniform, powdery, dead grey—benches covered in hundreds of components the colour of cement, geometry with none of the information. Every detail that tells you the ship is forty years into a hard life—every scuffed doorframe, every seat that has taken the same body in the same position a thousand times, every wall panel somebody has been past with a tool bag—none of that exists yet. It exists on a reference photograph and in the heads of the people holding the guns.
The print is the noun. The paint is the verb.
The trap of working inside a set
There is a cheat available on almost every large paint job, and interior work takes it away from you.
On an exterior—a hull, a vehicle, a big model—you overstate. You put down oxidisation that looks crude and vulgar at 300 mm because you know the eye that matters is fifteen or twenty metres back, and at that distance the vulgarity resolves into age. Half the trade runs on that gap between where you stand and where the audience stands.
Inside a cockpit there is no gap. You cannot step back—the space physically will not let you—and neither can the viewer, because they are standing in the same volume you were. Whatever you put down is read at the exact distance you put it down at. Every deliberate exaggeration is simply visible as exaggeration.
So despite it appearing simpler, the interior discipline is the harder one, and it is the opposite of the exterior instinct: understate, layer, and let the accumulation do the work rather than the strength of any one pass. Nothing is allowed to be a gesture. Everything has to survive being looked at from where it was painted.
That is the single most transferable thing I brought from that build to canvas—because a canvas on a wall is also read from arm’s length by somebody with nowhere else to be.
The silver problem
The test control set—the cockpit steering yoke—went out in a 2K silver.
Worth being exact about what that set was, because it matters. Nothing was spared on that department. The printed yoke in 2K silver was the control set: the piece that proved the geometry, the finish, and the read before anything was committed. The build then carried a cast aluminium control set into the ship. The printed one had done its job by the time the metal arrived.
Which is not a demotion. On a programme run at that pace, the test piece is where some of the decisions actually get made—and it is the only version of that object that carries the developmental paint rather than the production one.
Silver is the most punishing base in the trade. It records everything. Every drag of a cloth, every fingerprint in the flash-off window, and every particle in the air that day is in the surface for good. There is no forgiving mid-tone to bury a mistake in. You get one clean pass, or you strip it and lose a day you did not have.
And silver is a liar under lights. Straight off the gun it looks like a toy—bright, plastic, wrong. It only becomes metal when the weathering goes over it and the eye is given something to compare the shine against. Until that moment you are working on faith, on a piece that a lot of people are counting on, looking at something that appears to be getting worse.
That is the discipline the SW silver codes come out of, and it is why they are the hardest finishes in the catalogue to execute and the ones that read most convincingly as metal on linen.
Harrods is a harder audience than a camera.
I want to be precise about this, because it is the part of the job that non-painters never account for.
A camera is merciful. It gives you twenty-four frames a second, motion, a rig you built the finish for, and a lens that only ever hands the audience the one angle you chose. Nothing is examined. Nothing is dwelt on. A finish can be a magic trick that works from one mark and falls apart from anywhere else, and the film will never expose it.
Putting the same work into Harrods removes every one of those protections at once.
The object does not move. The viewer does—around it, up close, down to the join, back again, for as long as they like. There is no cut. The light is not mine; it is whatever the hall is doing at four in the afternoon in a British winter. And the audience is the specific problem: people who spend their lives within reach of exceptional objects and have an unsentimental eye for the moment something stops being exceptional. They will not be polite about it, and they will not be fooled by a photograph, because they are not looking at a photograph.
Then there is the room itself. Whatever is in that building alongside you is the finest of its own kind—and your piece has to hold its position against it, on a floor where nothing on display is ordinary. That is a genuinely intimidating bar, and it does not care what film your object came off.
So the work was finished twice over, in effect: once to a standard that would survive a lens, and again to a standard that would survive a stranger’s undivided attention at thirty centimetres, in daylight, next to the best of everything else.
What was actually artworked
It is worth putting the scope down plainly, because “worked on the Falcon” is a phrase that gets used loosely by people who touched one panel.
The breakdown covered the interior. Every single wall piece. The rear door and its frame. The rear Falcon seats. The entire lounge seating is in an extensive multi-tonal breakdown. And the chess table.
Multi-tonal is the part worth explaining, because it is the difference between a breakdown and a dirty-down. A dirty-down is one pass of grime over a base, and it reads as exactly that: a clean object with muck on it. A multi-tonal breakdown builds age out of many separate colour events sitting at different depths — a cool oxidisation under a warm one, a hand-oil sheen that only exists where hands actually go, a grease that has been walked in and partially cleaned off again, a bleached zone where something sat in the light for years. None of those layers is convincing alone. The eye reads the relationships between them and concludes, without being told, that time has happened here.
Do that across an entire lounge, and the environment starts to have a history. Somebody sat here more than there. This edge got knocked constantly, and that one never did. That is the whole job—not making things look old, but making the wear tell a consistent story about use.
Who actually built it
And here is the part worth knowing: those were the same people who worked on the Force Awakens cockpit that was used for filming.
They are also the people I worked alongside on Blade Runner 2049 in Budapest. Which means the two halves of this catalogue—the Blade Runner codes and the Star Wars codes—did not come out of two unrelated jobs I happened to pick up. They came out of the same working relationships, carried across productions and continents, where you learn how somebody builds and they learn what your paint needs from them.
That matters more than it sounds. A crew that has done it before does not need the conversation about tolerances, or about leaving a surface I can key into, or about what a finish requires that a structure has to allow for. The work is quicker, and it is better, because nobody is starting from scratch on how to work with each other.
I want to be exact about my own role, because “worked on the Falcon” is a phrase that has been stretched by people who did far less than the crew I was standing next to.
I was part of the Harrods Falcon crew. My side of it was interior paint: the breakdown, the finishes, and the aging across the interior. I did not build it.
The frameworks behind every panel were made by the model makers — and so was the console desk that houses the controls, which is a harder piece of work than it looks, because it has to carry the control hardware, take the weight of the public leaning on it all day, and disappear completely into a curved set that has no straight lines in it anywhere. Nothing I put on a surface would have held for five minutes without the structure underneath being right. The electrics and lighting men did the rest—every lit panel, every run, every board in that cockpit.
That is the honest provenance of this build, and it is a better claim than pretending it came off a set. It is not a fan replica. It is a licensed, endorsed full-scale build made by the crew who made the real one, using the same hands and the same standards, for a display that put the public inside it. The reason it stands up to close inspection is that nobody involved knew how to work to a lower standard.

If you notice it, I have failed.
Here is the thing almost nobody outside the trade understands, and it is the standard the entire job is judged against.
Breakdown has to be registered without being noticed
Not subtle and not tasteful. Unnoticed, but yet fully received. Somebody steps into that cockpit, and their immediate, unexamined conclusion is that the ship is old and has been worked hard. If you then asked them what gave them that impression, they could not tell you. They did not see weathering. They saw a ship. The information went in below the level at which they were paying attention, which is the only level at which it can be believed.
The moment a viewer’s eye stops on a mark and identifies it as a mark—as something a person put there—the illusion is over. They are no longer in a spacecraft. They are looking at a painted prop, and everything else in the room becomes a painted prop too.
So the craft is not in the marks. It is in the restraint.
And this is the strange position it puts you in: the proof that a breakdown has worked is that nobody reacts to it. Acceptance is the whole test. If a viewer accepts the surface, they have no reason to examine it, and if they have no reason to examine it, they will never notice a thing you did. The work succeeds by being agreed with rather than admired.
Which means a job done properly generates no praise at all. Nobody has ever walked out of a set and complimented the weathering—they walked out believing they had been somewhere, which is the compliment, delivered in the only form it can take. The only time a paint effect gets discussed is when it has failed. You learn to read silence as the result.
Clean space is the active ingredient. Almost all bad weathering is bad because there is too much of it. Grime everywhere reads as an object that has been decorated with grime. It is the untouched areas that make the touched ones convincing—the eye needs a baseline to measure wear against, and if everything is worn, nothing is. Deciding where not to go is a harder decision than deciding where to go, and it takes longer.
Two intensities, one room
The clearest example of that build is the difference between the seating and the greeblies.
The rear seating is a paint effect, and it is meant to read. Padded surfaces where people have sat, leaned, and slid for years—that wear is visible, worked, and unapologetic, because it is the wear a human body causes and a human body knows what it looks like without being taught. You can stand in front of it and see the effect. That is correct for that surface.
The Greeblies are the opposite discipline.
Greeblies are the small mechanical details covering the walls and consoles—the pipework, housings, boxes, and fittings that give a surface its complexity. Every one of them was broken down. And not one of them is noticeably broken down. Stand at the wall and you will not point at a single component and say, “That’s been aged.” You will simply not think the wall is plastic, which is exactly what you would think if the greeblies had been left clean.
That is the subliminal register, and it is a knife-edge. Nothing at all, and the wall dies—it reads as freshly moulded parts glued to a board, because that is what it is. A fraction too much and every fitting starts shouting individually, the wall becomes busy, and the eye starts cataloguing effects instead of accepting an environment.
The window between those two failures is narrow; it is different for every material and every light level, and there is no way to calculate it. You put it down, you walk away, and you come back and see whether you noticed anything. If you noticed, it comes off.
And that is why a canvas is different.
Everything above describes a finish built never to be looked at directly.
A canvas is the one place that reverses. There is no ship for the finish to disappear into and no scene for it to serve. It is hung alone on a wall and looked at deliberately, by somebody who came to look at it—the exact condition the work was trained to survive being spared from.
Which is why the canvases are not simply a film finish moved onto linen. They are that discipline made deliberately visible: the same materials and the same order of operations, executed knowing that this time the marks are the subject and every one of them will be examined. It is a considerably more exposing way to work than a wall of greeblies nobody is meant to notice.
And then they sat in it
It was not behind glass. It was never going to be—the whole point of the build was that people got inside it.
They sat in the pilot seats with both hands on the controls and had the photograph taken. They sat in the lounge, at the chess table, against walls I had spent ageing. Day after day, for the run of the display.
That is a condition few film props are ever built for, and it changes the paint job at a chemical level rather than a visual one. On a set, a hero piece is handled by a small number of people who have been told to be careful with it for a few days, and then it is crated. In a public walkthrough the same armrest takes thousands of hands—plus rings, watch straps, belt buckles, coat zips, and sleeves dragging across it ten thousand times. The display details are touched or grabbed by many who step into the cockpit interior, because aside from a photo, that is what it’s about.
A decorative finish does not survive that. It burnishes first—the weathering polishes off the high points, and the surface starts going shiny in exactly the places the eye lands, which reads as cheap immediately. Then it chips at the edges. Then somebody’s ring finds a soft layer and takes it back to the substrate.
So it had to be a working finish, not an appearance: hard-wearing systems chosen for adhesion and abrasion resistance first, with the ageing engineered into the layer stack rather than sitting on top of it as a fragile skin. Weathering that lives underneath a durable top system behaves entirely differently from weathering that is the outermost thing on the object—it takes contact and keeps its character, because contact is only reaching a layer that was designed to be reached.
There is a joke in it that only painters find funny. A public walkthrough puts genuine wear onto a surface that has been painted to look worn—and if the breakdown underneath is right, the real wear lands in the same places the painted wear does and simply agrees with it. Get it wrong, and the two fight, and the object looks fake within a month.
It is one of the very few jobs in my career that had to be beautiful at thirty centimetres, correct at twenty metres, and survive being sat in by the public. Most work is asked for one or two, max, of those three.
Paint tests are where the real work happens and nobody looks. It is the piece you are allowed to ruin. You put down a scheme, you hate it, you cut it back, you go again, and somewhere in the third or fourth attempt the finish stops being a plan and starts being a fact.
The cockpit was not the only thing I did in that building. The life-size Rey figure on the same programme was the exact inverse brief—a piece nobody was allowed to touch, standing in the round, walking past at arm’s length from every angle with no back and no bad side to hide a transition on. And where the interior was breakdown, the figure was material rendering: one hard substrate persuading the eye that it is wrapped linen, sun-bleached weave, worn hide, rubber and dust-caked skin all at once, with the Jakku dust graduating up from the hem the way it would actually settle. That is SW-10 in the catalogue, and it is the discipline underneath every canvas this studio makes.
Why any of this ends up on a canvas
Eleven Star Wars finish codes exist because eleven distinct paint problems were solved on those items, and each solution is a repeatable formula in my hands and nobody else’s.
Not a look. Not a reference. A sequence—this base, this many passes, this dwell time before the cut-back, this direction of drag, this order. The kind of thing you cannot reverse-engineer from a photograph of the result, which is precisely why the replica market cannot produce it and why a bench test exposes them in about ninety seconds.
And there is the reason the Harrods section is in this post rather than in a caption.
A canvas on your wall is not the camera’s condition. It is the display-case condition. It does not move, you have unlimited time with it, you will pass it every day for years, and it will be seen in your own light next to whatever else you have chosen to put in that room—which, in the houses these pieces go into, is not ordinary either. Every excuse available to a finish on film is unavailable to a finish on linen.
That is the standard the yoke set was taken to, and it is the standard I hold the canvases to. Not “Would this read on camera.” Would this survive somebody who knows exactly what they are looking at, standing a foot away, for as long as they want, on a wall where it has to earn its place.
It also answers the question collectors ask last and worry about first: whether a heavily worked surface is delicate. It is not. The systems on your canvas are the systems that went into a walkthrough attraction and came out the other side—built for adhesion and abrasion, with the age engineered into the stack rather than balanced on top of it. Do not go at one with a cloth, and do not put it in the sun; beyond that it is a finish designed to be lived with, by a hand that spent just enough time in making one survive the public.
The ship itself is not available to you. It was never going to be. But the formulas that put the age into that interior are still on my bench, and they go onto linen exactly the way they went onto the walls, the door frame and the seating — same materials, same order, same hand, same eye trained on a surface that has to hold up at arm’s length.
That is the whole proposition of this workshop, and it started from a print at Pinewood with not enough days left on the schedule.
